25 people killed in anti-Muslim violence in Assam

Guwahati, Oct 5, 2008: Around 25 people have been killed in anti-Muslim violence in Assam’s north eastern districts. More than fifty thousands people have left their homes to seek safety in safer areas. Amy has been called in and shoot at sight orders issued.

Four of these were deaths in police firing. More than 50 others were critically wounded in mob violence and arson. Security sources said that among those killed, 19 belonged to the Muslim community and six were Bodos.

Mangaldoi district deputy commissioner Dhruba Hazarika confirmed that four persons were killed in police firing after a mob killed two persons. “There was also some arson. The situation is tense, but under control,” he said

Violence against Muslims broke out when Bodo tribesmen attacked Muslim villages on Friday, when they were celebrating Eidul Fitr in Udalguri district’s Rowta area in Assam. The area is just around 100 kilometers from Assam capital Dispur.
